Seven hospitals in Michigan won top hospital recognition — led by the University of Michigan Hospitals and Beaumont Hospital — in U.S. News and World Report’s 26th Best Hospitals report.

The nation’s No. 1 hospital was Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, followed by Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.; Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore; UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, and Cleveland Clinic. Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago was ranked 11th.

No Michigan hospital was awarded “honor roll” ranking, which recognizes the top 15 hospitals in the nation. Honor roll hospitals ranked high in at least six of 16 surveyed specialties. Measured indicators include patient volume, risk-adjusted survival rates and adequacy of nurse staffing.

But the seven Michigan hospitals were nationally ranked in at least one adult specialty, with UM ranking in 11 specialties and Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak ranking in nine specialties. An additional 15 hospitals in Michigan were recognized as “high performing” in at least one adult specialty, with Beaumont Hospital, Troy having eight noted specialties.

Only 2.7 percent, or 137 hospitals out of 5,000 in the U.S., earned even one ranked spot.

Besides Ann Arbor-based UM and Beaumont, Michigan hospitals included the following national ranking: Spectrum Health, Grand Rapids; Munson Medical Center, Traverse City; Mercy Health St. Mary’s Hospital, Grand Rapids; Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit; and DMC Harper University Hospital, Detroit.

In metro Detroit, top-rated adult hospitals were led by UM as the No. 1 hospital, followed by Beaumont in Royal Oak, Beaumont in Troy, Harper, Henry Ford and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor.
