The Wayne County Airport Authority announced details Thursday of its new headquarters building and said the building will bear the name of former Wayne County Road CommissionChairman Michael Berry.

The new headquarters building will be constructed next to the North Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, and is expected to open in 2017, according to a news release.

Michael Berry is an attorney and philanthropist who was elected to the road commission in 1967 and served as chairman for 10 years.

The former Berry International Terminal, also named after Berry, was decommissioned in 2008, when the airport’s North Terminal opened, the authority said.

“Naming our new administration offices in honor of Mr. Berry allows his legacy and vision to continue on,” said Airport Authority CEO Thomas Naughton in the release.

Construction on the 84,000-square-foot Michael Berry Building – Wayne County Airport Authority Headquarters is likely to begin later this year.
