Annual Industry Outlook Lunch by Automation Alley trumpets good news.

Small numbers representing good news was the theme of the day today at Automation Alley’s annual Industry Outlook Lunch at the Colony Club in Detroit.

Southeast Michigan ranks No. 1 nationally for the number of advanced automotive industry jobs (67,825) and businesses (462) and in the number of architectural and engineering jobs (78,740).

The region ranks No. 2 in the Midwest for the number of utility patents issued (3,734) and tech-focused jobs (171,380).

It also ranks No. 3 nationally in the percentage of total employment in the tech industry (8.5 percent and in the number of degrees earned in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and math (9,428 in the school year 2012-13).

The annual report ranked 15 nationally recognized technology hubs based on U.S. government statistics from 2013 as compiled by the Anderson Economic Group of East Lansing.

The other hubs were in Seattle; San Jose-Santa Clara, Calif.; Dallas-Fort Worth; Austin, Texas; Minneapolis-St. Paul; Grand Rapids; Indianapolis; St. Louis, Mo.; Chicago; Cleveland; Cincinnati; Atlanta; Pittsburgh and New York.
