Groundbreaking planned Thursday for $17M makeover of Midtown buildings

A groundbreaking ceremony is planned Thursday for the $17 million renovation of two derelict buildings in Detroit’s Midtown area, where demand for housing is growing.

When the project is done, 47 “quality, affordable apartment homes” will be available, its supporters say.

Some 275 jobs are to be created as part of the renovation of the Cass Plaza and Davenport Building.

The majority investor in the project is the Great Lakes Capital Fund, a community development finance institution that has pledged $9 million to remake the vacant buildings.

The development team includes Cass Corridor Neighborhood Development Corp. and Ginosko Development Corp. as the project sponsor; Rohde Construction Co. as the general contractor; architects Fusco, Shaffer & Pappas; property management company KMG Prestige; and Robert Zinser Housing Development Consulting.
