$20 million Midtown Detroit development planned for Selden Street

A Detroit development group announced plans today for a $20-million, mixed-use development in Midtown that will span Selden from Second to Fourth.

The nonprofit development group Midtown Detroit  unveiled investment plans for the Selden Corridor Initiative, which will include 14 single-family homes, a brewery school through Eastern Michigan University, an Up North-inspired eatery and the first Midwest location for the East Coast-based Barcade, among other developments.

Sue Mosey, the executive director of Midtown Detroit, said that about half of the homes, which will be on Fourth and Selden, have already been sold. All the projects are expected to be finished by late fall 2018.

“The work we’re doing is really building off of a lot of other people’s investments over here,” Mosey said at the announcement held at the development site, between 644 and 666 Selden.

The two Selden Street properties will feature prominently in the project. The 644 Selden building, which was the site of a casket company, will include the North Cookshop restaurant with an Up North flair, the Creative Company Accelerator, which focuses on job opportunities for women and minorities, and rental units, according to a news release.

The 666 Selden building, formerly the site of Smith Welding, will feature a brewery training school and the Barcade, a craft beer bar with classic video games that got its start in Brooklyn, according to the news release.

The group plans to convert the service area between the buildings into a public gathering space called the Selden Courtyard.
