$10 million awarded to 10 Michigan health centers

Ten health centers in Michigan will get $1 million each in federal funds for facilities improvements, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Wednesday.

The awards will allow health centers to renovate or acquire new health center clinical space to help provide care to an estimated 52,956 new patients in Michigan, HHS said in a news release.

“Providing funding to help health centers renovate their facilities will allow them to provide care to more patients,” Health Resources and Services Administration Acting Associate Administrator Jim Macrae said in the release “Perhaps more importantly though, health centers will now be able to provide more health services in one location, better meeting the needs of their communities.”

The health centers in Michigan to receive the grants are:

  • The Wellness Plan, Detroit
  • Covenant Community Care Inc., Detroit
  • Detroit Health Care for the Homeless, Detroit
  • Family Health Center Inc., Kalamazoo
  • Genesee Health System, Flint
  • Intercare Community Health Network, Bangor
  • Sterling Area Health Center, Sterling
  • Thunder Bay Community Health Service Inc., Hillman
  • Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center, Gwinn
  • Center For Family Health Inc., Jackson

The investment builds on the nearly $8.7 million awarded to Michigan health centers for construction and/or renovation in September 2015. This funding comes from the Affordable Care Act’s Community Health Center Fund.

Nationwide, $260 million in funding was announced for 290 health centers in 45 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Since the beginning of 2009, health centers have added 6 million patients; they now serve 23 million people each year.
