Detroit seeks proposals to redevelop empty, historic Lee Plaza tower west of New Center

Detroit is attempting to jump-start redevelopment of the abandoned Lee Plaza tower on the city’s west side.

The city announced Monday that it is seeking development proposals for the high-rise, which opened in 1929 as a luxury residential hotel and closed in the 1990s as low-income senior housing. An earlier $51 million rehabilitation plan by a private developer fell apart last year because of financing problems.

The city says that redeveloping the 17-story tower could yield about 200 new residential apartments, and at least 20% of them must be set aside as affordable residences for individuals making $38,000 a year or less. The remainder of the apartments could then be market rate.

Lee Plaza is at 2240 West Grand Blvd., about a mile west of New Center and the Motown Museum and outside the boundaries of Detroit’s trendy Midtown area.
