A combined $90 million in new defense contracts awarded last week to Oshkosh Defense and Chrysler Group International LLC will bring at least some work to Warren and Romulus.
Oshkosh Defense, a subsidiary of Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Corp. that has a new technical center in Warren, won a $71.8 million contract for 417 medium tactical trucks through the U.S. Army Tacom Life Cycle Management Command in Warren.
That’s in addition to a $260.1 million contract award last September for Oshkosh to produce 2,060 trucks and trailers in its Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles contract. Work on both contracts is to be completed by March 2012.
Production work will be primarily in Oshkosh, Wis. But the company established a technical center last year in Warren for engineering, contract management and systems technical support of its Army medium-truck fleet contracts.
Chrysler, meanwhile, won a sole-source award worth nearly $18 million for procurement of 530 unassembled kits, plus a set of contracted spare parts, for the Jeep J8 under a federal Foreign Military Sales agreement with Israel.
Component production on the J8 contract will be performed in Romulus and is to be completed by April 2012. The J8 is a military variant of the Jeep, originally sold only overseas until 2009.
