Three Michigan Hospitals Were Named “Best Hospitals” By U.S. News And World Report
Detroit’s health care industry is growing, and three Michigan hospitals – Beaumont Health, the Henry Ford Health System, and the University of Michigan hospital – have been named a “best hospital” byU.S. News and World Report. But what and where are the best hospitals in Metro Detroit?
The rankings included an analysis of 5,000 medical centers and their specialities around the United States, so inclusion on this list is a notable accomplishment. Here are the top 10 hospitals in Metro Detroit (and they include Ann Arbor and Flint in their definition of the Detroit Metro Area).
Hospitals are ordered according to their performance in medical specialties like cancer and in common procedures and conditions like knee replacement and heart failure. The bottom two on the list were a tie for the number nine slot. We also included a map above of where those 10 best hospitals are.
1) University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers
Located in Ann Arbor – 899 beds, 1,242 doctors
2) Beaumont – Royal Oak
Located in Royal Oak – 1070 beds, 267 doctors
3) Henry Ford Hospital
Located in Detroit – 751 beds, 1,473 doctors
4) Harper University Hospital
Located in Detroit – 535 beds, 626 doctors
5) Beaumont Hospital – Troy
Troy – 418 beds, 133 doctors
6) St. Joseph Mercy Oakland
Pontiac – 409 beds, 694 doctors
7) Sinai-Grace Hospital
Detroit – 310 beds, 609 doctors
8) Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital
Wyandotte – 348 beds, 491 doctors
9) (TIE) Beaumont Hospital – Grosse Pointe

If you don’t count Ann Arbor, the Detroit Medical Center in Detroit would have slid on to the list.
Beaumont had nine nationally-ranked specialties and was named 16th in the U.S. for orthopedics and 17th for diabetes care. Henry Ford’s neurology and neurosurgery department, which specifically focuses on adult patient care, was ranked 46th in the nation.
U of M topped the list and had 11 nationally-ranked specialties and was named 10th in the nation for urology and ophthalmology care.
These are impressive rankings, and it also shows just how important health care has become as an industry in Southeast Michigan.
