New vision for Villages in Detroit: Housing, new retail, streetscapes

City of Detroit planners have outlined a vision for increased development in the Villages district on Detroit’s east side including more affordable housing and more retail development.

In a community meeting Thursday evening, Detroit Planning Director Maurice Cox and his aides showed off their plans to more than 100 community residents. Plans call for extensive new mixed-use development along Kercherval near Mt. Elliott, as well as new and renovated housing projects in the area and significant streetscape improvements including wider sidewalks, protected bike lanes, and landscaping.
