Indoor ax throwing arena coming to Palm Beach County

Game of Axes, an indoor ax throwing arena, is slated to open in Boynton Beach in November.

The 2,995-square-foot arena, at 12550 S. Military Trail, will be open daily. Players earn points by throwing an ax at a target. There will be nine lanes with 18 targets, so pairs play against each other.

“Our vision for the facility is to bring people together,” co-owner Joey Magee said, adding that employees, considered ax masters, will teach people how to stand, throw an ax and hit the target.

Magee said ax throwing arenas – which originated in Canada – are also popular in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Illinois and Michigan.

He said that he’s been working on the project for the past year, but it was difficult to find a location where the concept is approved by both the city and the landlord. People are not familiar with the ax throwing concept, so they were concerned, he said.

South Florida has at least one ax throwing bar – Chops + Hops at 702 N.E. First Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. An ax throwing lounge, Extreme Throwing, is scheduled to open at 540 N. Miami Ave. in Miami in September, according to its website. Axe Throwing Society, at 1301 W. Copans Road in Pompano Beach, is also scheduled to open soon, according to its website.

Boynton Beach is considered an emerging neighborhood and is home to a wave of new development and concepts.
