DETROIT (WXYZ) – Three viaducts in Midtown are getting a makeover. Midtown Detroit Inc. is in charge of Midtown Viaducts Public Art and Light Project.

Artists from Detroit and Ann Arbor are tackling the underpasses: one on 3rd Ave., one on 2nd Ave. and one on Cass.

The viaducts will have different designs: animated lighting that reacts to the motion of vehicles and pedestrians, light boxes mounted on the walls and ceiling and more than 7,500 reflectors.

“These are areas where people are passing through on a daily basis whether they’re driving, cycling, walking. We want to make sure these are safe areas where people feel comfortable,” says Ann Marie Borucki, Midtown Detroit Inc. special projects manager.

Each team is getting $75,000 to renovate the underpasses and the projects are expected to be complete by the end of October.
