Airbnb hopes to double Detroit presence through 'experiences'

San Francisco-based Airbnb projects it will double its economic impact in Detroit this year to $20 million following the launch of program called “Trips,” which is marketing 23 experiences like sparring at the Detroit Boxing Gym or touring the city’s recording studios.

The program targets millennials looking for authentic experiences who would rather stay in a cool neighborhood than a hotel and have been the early adopters of Airbnb.

Airbnb, the web-based platform that helps travelers rent private homes or rooms in cities across the globe, said it doubled its 2015 economic impact in Detroit to $10.5 million last year.

Of that total, $3.1 million went directly to Detroiters hosting guests in their homes, and the remaining $7.4 million came through indirect spending with local restaurants, shops, taxi cabs and other local businesses, the company says.
