5 Detroit neighborhoods to watch

Posted on November 6, 2017

From new bridges to new breweries, these neighborhoods could look very different in a few years

It’s that time of year when we’re starting to take a look back at what’s been happening with Detroit development and what’s to come in the near future. It’s been a busy year for big projects—most notably the opening of both the QLINE and the Little Caesars Arena. But more redevelopments have been happening across the city—redevelopments that could drastically change neighborhoods in the coming years. Here are five neighborhoods (and broader areas) we’re keeping an eye on in 2018.

East Riverfront

With the release of the East Riverfront redevelopment plan earlier this year, we understood what could happen to the 3-mile post-industrial/residential/public space span between the Ren Center and Belle Isle. We’ve seen announcements for the Stone Soap Building, which will convert an old warehouse into new, modern residential. More recently, a new residential and grocery development was announced nearby on Jefferson.

In the next few years, expect the Riverwalk to extend to Belle Isle, new construction on the parking lots just east of the Ren Center, a new beach, possible development on the Uniroyal site near Belle Isle, and more requests for proposals (RFP) for older industrial buildings in the area.
